Liszt és considerat un dels grans virtuosos del Romanticisme, juntament amb els seus contemporanis [[Frédéric Chopin]], [[Johannes Brahms]] i [[Hector Berlioz]]. En nombroses ocasions fou considerat el més gran pianista de l'època.
